Target unwanted weeds, grasses and pests all year round
The Year Round Program is a lawn care package designed to build a healthier, stronger and greener lawn. It includes a seasonal visit (4 times per year) to keep on top of weeds, pests and diseases. Besides this, it aims at fertilising your lawn using the correct fertilisers and rates depending on the time of year. As it aims at eradicate most unwanted weeds and grasses in your lawn, it is a program which targets these unwanted weeds and grasses on a seasonal basis (aiming to remove these at their peak growing periods and destroy their seeds while in their dormant stage). In short, it’s a program which systematically removes most weeds and unwanted grasses, leaving you with a base lawn- preferably couch, Blue Couch or buffalo.
The chemicals and fertilisers used are high quality and used by green-keepers on bowling greens, turf wickets, golf courses and sporting venues throughout Australia.
As herbicides are being used throughout the year, if your lawn has weeds, you can expect discolouration in the lawn of some description. Please read the information in the table below for a better idea.
We will be using a pre-emergent herbicide to stay on top of the weeds. Basically, it kills weed seeds before they germinate, breaking into the life-cycle of the plant and will remain active in the soil for, up to, six months. For more information on how to eradicate weeds, please check out our blog post on How to Combat Weeds.
Spot spraying with various chemicals throughout the year may also be required but will be used at a minimum and only as required.
Army Worm and the larvae of Black Beetle are ever- present but, in plague numbers, can devastate a lawn in days.
We use an insecticide called ‘Acelepryn’ to help prevent these and other pests from harming your lawn. Again, it is used as a ‘preventative’ measure rather than a reactive one. It, too, remains active in the soil for, up to, six months.
Acelepryn has a low toxicity reaction to bees, birds and aquatic life and an extremely low toxicity reaction to mammals making it the most preferred insecticide for a residential lawn.

This process takes place throughout the year but varies in content season by season. Depending on the time of year, N:P:K (Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium) ratios vary. Added to this, other elements like Iron and Magnesium are required to help your lawn stay healthy.
Autumn (February/March) visit
Targeting Summer Grass, Paspalum and broad-leafed weeds. Applying pre-emergent herbicide for Winter Grass. In late summer, Paspalum is prevalent and it will be our main target. Expect brown patches to develop after spraying. There may be more Carpet Grass growing that may have been missed by spray in summer. However, necrosis should not be as wide-spread.
Winter (May/June) visit
Targeting Winter Grass, Moss and Sedge. Applying pre-emergent herbicide for Spring flowering broad-leafed weeds. After treating the lawn for moss, the moss will turn whitish. It will be left in the lawn until Spring to ensure total eradication. Further applications may be necessary to ensure a total kill. Winter Grass will yellow off before dying. Sedge will go brown.
Spring (August/September) visit
Targeting Moss, Winter Grass and all broad-leafed weeds including Bindii, Clover, Oxalis and Onion Weed. Applying pre-emergent herbicide for Crab Grass, Paspalum and Summer Grass. Please note: Spearhead, which we use to kill broad-leafed weeds can have an effect on buffalo, turning it a mottled yellow colour. This will go away after a few weeks. Unlike many of the chemicals used, the chemical used for killing Onion Weed in Buffalo grass can take up to 4-6 weeks to take effect. The Onion Weed will turn white.
Summer (November/December) visit
Targeting Carpet Grass, Crab Grass and broad-leafed weeds. It must be noted that, in some lawns, Carpet Grass can cover large areas and that large brown patches caused by necrosis can be expected after spraying.
You will notice that the visits are a little irregular and they are because-
In Autumn, we want to hit Poa annua (Winter Grass) early and, hopefully, kill it before germination;
In Spring, we are looking to hit many of the summer grasses like Paspalum dilatatum (Paspalum), Digitaria sanguinalis (Summer grass) and Eleusine indica (Crabgrass/ Crowsfoot).
Fertilisers are used throughout the year and, depending on the season, different fertilisers are used.
Summer- a fertiliser with an N:P:K ratio of 30:1:5 + Fe + Mn is used to generate deep colour and excellent growth; Autumn- a fertiliser with an N:P:K ratio of 20:0:20 is used to strengthen the cell walls of the leaf sward of the grass
and to help it stay greener, longer over the winter months;
Winter- a fertiliser with an N:P:K ratio of 30:1:5 + Fe + Mn is used to retain good colour over the cooler months; Spring- a fertiliser with an N:P:K ratio of 34:1:6 is used to stimulate warm season grasses from dormancy.
Please note: we use both liquid and granular forms of fertiliser. The liquid fertiliser will produce greener leaf colour enhancing the look of your lawn, while we find a mixture of quick and slow release, granular fertiliser, although not as fast acting as the liquid fertilisers, will last much longer in the soils and be more beneficial to your lawn and its’ root system over the course of time.
Below, you will find a list of chemicals we use when spraying your lawns. More information on those chemicals can be sourced through the internet.
Herbicides- we use a range of herbicides that will help eradicate unwanted weeds in your lawn. The chemicals used are not harmless to humans and/ or pets but they would have to be ingested in quantity before symptoms like vomiting or diarrhoea became evident.
The herbicides used include:
Pesticides- For over a decade, I have resisted using pesticides; instead, using other forms of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) to control pests like Army Worm and Black Beetle. However, there is a product on the market that is safe to use around mammals, bees, birds and fish. This pesticide is Acelepryn.
